March 2007

The goal of Safe Harbor’s Missions Team is to proclaim the Gospel and promote the growth and health of Christ’s Kingdom on Kent Island and around the world.

The team focuses on three critical aspects of missions –
» Sending people out on short and long-term mission assignments,
»Receiving people back from missions in a way that shows God’s love,
»Sharing about missions and missionaries to promote excitement about being involved in our Lord’s work.

             (See Matthew 9:37-38; 28: 19-20; Galatians 6:10).

With feedback from many members of our congregation, and approval of the Session, the team has made a strategic decision to focus Safe Harbor’s Mission involvements in seven areas, four countries -- El Salvador, Peru, Romania, and Turkey, and three U.S. locations – Maryland’s Eastern Shore (including Kent Island), Baltimore and West Virginia.

We also support church plants, especially those in one of these seven areas. We celebrate the Lord’s work in missions at Safe Harbor through a Missions Spotlight every third Sunday, through Missions Focus Weekends in the Fall and Spring, and a pizza luncheon in the Summer. In 2006, over 100 people from Safe Harbor participated in a short-term mission trip, and we encourage you to seriously consider signing up for one. And there are many other ways to get involved in missions, including praying for missions and missionaries, helping to support people to go on short or longer term missions, helping to receive people back from short or longer term missions, preparing for a possible long-term mission assignment, supporting missions and missionaries with financial gifts or the raising of resources, and helping to develop programs at Safe Harbor to increase involvement in missions.

The Missions Team is chaired by Mark Weist and co-chaired by Dan Zagone. Other members of the team include Bill Almy, Jeanne and Cal Walsh, Chris Moore, Aaron Krompart, Irv Martin, Bob Masters, Rick Mellinger, and Sandi Wiscott. The Team receives ongoing guidance from our pastors, Todd Williams, Will La Rose and Christian Graham. We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the church and anyone is welcome to attend a meeting to contribute ideas and/or learn more about Safe Harbor’s missions. The team expresses its considerable appreciation to Brian and Phyllis Bankard for their leadership and support of missions over the years and to Dot Seeds, Shirley Moore, and Valerie and David Carey, members of the team who have recently stepped down to enable more involvement in other ministries.

If you are interested in praying for missionaries, please contact Jeanne Walsh. Liaisons for getting involved in a short-term mission trip or supporting the work in one of the seven focus areas are: El Salvador, Christian Graham (christian@safeharborpca.org); Peru, Bill Almy; Romania, Will LaRose (will@safeharborpca.org); Turkey, Jeanne Walsh; Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Aaron Krompart; Baltimore, Sandi Wiscott; and West Virginia, Irv Martin.
